Every day, more and more students are interested in spending a semester abroad during their college years. This process can be long and stressful at times, but it is essential to find the program that best fits the students' needs to assure for a great experience.
Choosing a Country
This is one of the more obvious (but crucial) decisions that a student must make in finding the perfect study abroad program. Many Universities offer a wide variety of programs that may only cater to a particular country or region. Right off the bat, this will most likely eliminate a few choices. However, going into the process, many already have an idea of where they would like to go. The next big decision may be the location within the country, such as a school with a metropolitan scene or out in the country. This can be the opportunity to try something new like living in a different type of atmosphere.
Another point a student will want to take into consideration when choosing a country and location is whether or not he or she will want to travel. Although in every country they will be able to do that to some extent, Europe, for example, would be ideal for those interested in doing extensive traveling (maybe during Spring Break), as countries are fairly accessible and affordable to move around in.
Accommodations
Once the student has narrowed down his or her program choices, it's time to get into the details. In the long run, accommodations can make a big difference, depending on what the program may or may not offer. For instance, one program might include airfare whereas another may provide a meal plan. It all depends on the individual, the country, and what the student is looking for.
Traveling solo for the first time can be a scary experience, so a program that puts together group flights, with representatives there to greet and help assist could be the accommodation needed to help ease into the experience. Or it may be the little perks that add up to something much larger in the end, such as programs that offer special weekend trips with fellow study abroaders. Planned get-togethers (dinners, going to see a play, etc) can also be a nice benefit provided by a program.
Host Universities and Courses Offered
Upon picking a country and narrowing down to a few programs, a student will want to do more research, but this time on possible Host University candidates. Browsing the net and exploring the school's official Website is a great way to find out more specific information like the history and mission statement. The site may provide a supplement to course information, as well. A more detailed description of the different classes can help in deciding what University fits best. It is up to what the student is looking for – courses that will transfer for a major or taking electives for fun.
In the end though, it is important to take all of these factors into account equally, and thoughtfully plan out and research information. Spending a semester in another country is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most people, so choosing the perfect study abroad program can make all the difference.
